Orkin Bed Bug Feud Game & CleanRest Pillow Encasement #Giveaway

Disclosure: I have been provided information for this post from Orkin through Partnershub.  Sponsor is responsible for prize fulfillment. I will receive a CleanRest Pillow Encasement in exchange for this post. No monetary compensation has been/will be received.

We have heard a lot on the news over the past year about bed bugs.  One of my friends encountered bed bugs when she took her family on vacation.  She sent her husband down to the pool with the kids when she had a migraine.  When her hubby returned, my friend had lots of bites.  They checked out of that hotel room and were moved to a suite.  She was so paranoid that she had the manager and housekeeping take off all the sheets and make sure there were no bed bugs!  Thankfully, this has never happened to us.  I cannot stand any creepy crawlies so I would have freaked!

Orkin is back with #BedBugFeud - test your bed bug knowledge and see if you are keeping a clean bed in 2015!
At Orkin, we use the latest technology and unparalleled training to develop an effective treatment that's right for your needs. To learn more about our pest control based in science or to schedule an inspection, visit orkin.com or call 1-800-800-ORKIN.

Torticollis. Have you heard of it?

You know what is said about best plans...I had planned to be so good about updating the blog daily,   Then, life got in the way.  Over a week ago, Chefy came home and told me that he was not feeling well.  His neck was hurting and he felt horrible.  I gave him 2 ibuprofen and he dosed off for a little while.  When he woke up, he was feeling even worse.  He could barely move his neck at all.  Turning to the right or left, up or down was very painful.  We called our family nurse, aka my mom.  She said to get him a heating pad to use and to give him 400 mg more of ibuprofen.  The pain eased enough for him to sleep part of the night.

Chefy woke me up early the next morning asking me to take him to the ER.  That NEVER happens!  My hubby hates to go to any doctor, much less the emergency room, so I knew he was in pain.  Luckily the ER was slow when we arrived so he was taken back quickly.  They came in and checked him out and diagnosed him with Torticollis.  Never heard of it?  Neither had we!  Here is what it is:
Torticollis, also known as wry neck or loxia, is a dystonic condition defined by an abnormal, asymmetrical head or neck position, which may be due to a variety of causes.(thanks Wikipedia)

The doctor gave Chefy a shot of prednisone, a prescription for pain killers and a prescription for muscle relaxers and sent him home.  Here we are, more than a week later, and Chefy is still in pain. Some of the stiffness has gone away, but not all of it.  Chefy is relying on muscle relaxers to ease up the pain enough to be able to sleep at night, and his ibuprofen is helping him be able to work.  It's crazy.  This appeared out of the clear blue, and it just wants to hang around.  After calling the doctor, we found out that this stiffness could go on for a while, and once it does go away, it can come back.  UGH!

My last week has been spent taking care of Chefy.  Praying that all my readers are healthy and are enjoying a wonderful 2015.  God Bless You All!

The Identical DVD - Review and Giveaway #theidentical

Disclosure:  (in accordance with the FTC’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”): Many thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway. Choice of winners and opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this review and post.
Only one entrant per mailing address, per giveaway. If you have won the same prize on another blog, you are not eligible to win it again. Winner is subject to eligibility verification.

Being released on DVD today, January 13th, THE IDENTICAL tells the story of twin brothers unknowingly separated at birth during the Great Depression.  One twin, DREXEL HEMSLEY becomes an iconic 50’s rock ‘n’ roll star, while the other, RYAN WADE (Blake Rayne) struggles to balance his love for music and pleasing his father. The Reverend Wade (Ray Liotta) and his wife (Ashley Judd) are sure their adopted son has been gifted and called by God to be a preacher. But Ryan challenges his parent’s vision for his life, and unflinchingly chooses to launch his own music career with his best friend (Seth Green). Encouraged by his wife (Erin Cottrell) and employer (Joe Pantoliano), Ryan embarks on an unpredictable, provocative path – performing the legendary music of Drexel Hemsley in sold out venues all across the country.

As the brothers destinies tragically collide, Ryan discovers that Drexel is his identical twin which leads him to question everything he’s ever believed about God, family and his own identity.  The Identical is a captivating story about a family restored and a life discovered that lifts your soul and warms your heart.

The DVD contains over 85 minutes of bonus content including “Making The Identical,” Behind the Scenes, and Deleted Scenes!

Chefy and I both really enjoyed the movie.  The story drew us in and the music kept us there.  I never like to tell too much about a movie because I do not want to give away the plot.  What I will tell you is that I was in tears when I put myself in the birth mother's shoes when she had to make the decision to separate her twins.  I felt for Ryan when he was being pushed by his father to go in to the ministry.  Following his dreams set in motion life changing moments that we all can identify with ourselves.   Chefy and I were pleased that this movie was one we felt could be enjoyed by the whole family.

Blog Dare Day 8: It's the year of...

I am participating in the Bloggy Moms Network Blog Dare and doing my best to post every single day of 2015.  Playing catch up right now!

When every new year begins and I start with a clean slate, I am filled with hope.  I am hoping for a good year, one that only has changes for the better.  2014 was not that kind of year.  It was full of changes, but most were for the worse.  Chefy and I sat down and discussed our wishes for this year and this is what we came up with.

This is the year of getting things done.  We plan to declutter and get organized.  We want to put our shop back together and have our attic organized so we can grab what we need without having to search for hours.  We have a craft room that we want to use more.  We started organizing it before Christmas, and are just starting to get back to it.  I want to better organize my blog posts and review schedule.

I'm playing catch up right now because I managed to get behind.  Time management is the key for me right now.  I declare 2015 the year of getting things done!   What types of things are you planning to get done this year?  Do you have any suggestions that could help me?

Blog Dare Day 7: As far as I'm concerned...

I am participating in the Bloggy Moms Network Blog Dare and doing my best to post every single day of 2015.  Playing catch up right now!

I'm not sure about everyone else, but sometimes I realize I am changing myself because of the perception of other people.  It is sad to say, because I know exactly who I am and what I believe.  Most of the time I have no problem expressing myself, but there are some times when I just go with the flow.

When I was growing up, I learned from my mom that people are all the same.  Race, religious preference, sex and sexual orientation were only a small part of who everyone is.  My friends were all different.  They were different races, male and female, gay and straight, Christian and non-Christian.  None of that mattered to me.  I was taught to look inside each person and get to know them from the inside out.

I am a Christian and I believe that God made all of us.  We are all different and we are precious to him.  If He loves each of us, for who we are individually, why shouldn't we love each other the same way?  No longer will I listen to or blindly follow narrow minded people.

Jesus told us to love each other as He loved us.  As far as I'm concerned, I am going with my gut feelings and I will be deciding for myself.  My Bible says "Judge Not, Lest Thee Be Judged."  It is about time we all start following that!

Blog Dare Day 6: I'm hearing

I am participating in the Bloggy Moms Network Blog Dare and will be doing my best to post every single day of 2015.  Playing catch up right now!

Recently, I have been hearing more and more about going to blogger conferences.  I had thought about trying to go to one, but I am honestly unsure about the value of it.  I would like to personally get to know some of my fellow bloggers, and to have a chance to learn from them.  I'm just not sure where to start.

Do small regional blogger conferences exist? Are they worth attending?  Is there such a thing as a blogging mentor?  I would love to find out more from my fellow bloggers.  I'm hearing a lot about Blogher, Type A Parent, and lots of others.  Now I want to hear from some people who have attended!

Can any of you answer my questions?  The more I hear, the more questions I have!

A Love Letter From God - Children's Book Review & Giveaway

Disclosure (in accordance with the FTC’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”): Many thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway. Choice of winners and opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this review and post.

Reading together is something I started even before Kat was born.  I read to her daily while she was still "cooking."  I am a huge reader and I have passed that love down to my family.  I am constantly looking for good books for everyone, adults, teens, tweens, kids and even babies!  Recently, I was offered the chance to review a new children's book and I was thrilled to do it!
Author P.K. Hallinan and
Illustrator: Laura Watson

I received A Love Letter from God for my family to review.  In this story, the author, P.K. Hallinan, supposes what God might say in a personal letter written to a child. The unconditional and unlimited nature of God's love is revealed through simple and lyrical language. Rich and textured illustrations, along with heart-shaped cutouts, will make this uplifting book a family favorite.  It is a great message for little ones on Valentine's Day, or for everyday inspiration.  A Love Letter from God will remind children of God's eternal love and how He demonstrates that love through everyday miracles and by the wonder of His presence.  Thanks to the colorful and touching illustrations of Laura Watson, children will also learn how to appreciate their own individuality and how to use their unique gifts to be a blessing to others.

From the very beginning, we fell in love with this book.  The story is so sweet and I really feel like this is what God would say to kids, well, to all of us!  My mom read the book when she was here and she agreed that it is wonderful.  I will be reading it to my Children's Church class and to my nieces and nephews too.  This book has become a new family favorite, and I know it will be for a long time!

Would you like to receive a copy of this book for your family?  One lucky Shelly's Bits and Pieces reader will win their very own copy!  Simply enter in the rafflecopter form below!   Don't want to wait?

The Blog Dare Day 5: It is adorable...

I am participating in the Bloggy Moms Network Blog Dare and will be doing my best to post every single day of 2015.  Playing catch up right now!

I love children, my own, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends...everyone's!  I love watching them interact with each other and with adults.   Children are not afraid to show how they feel and they are so honest about things.  Chefy and I, like many other family members, are heavier people.  Kat was taught to look inside before making assumptions about people and I am very proud that she is non-judgmental.

My nieces and nephews are being raised the same way, and I love watching them snuggle up to all their family members, no matter what size they are.  They also don't care about someone's color.  Everyone is different because God made them that way!  That is something we have always told the kids.

We had a sleep over recently and I loved watching everyone play and snuggle together.  It is adorable!  I wanted to share some photos with my readers!

The Blog Dare Day 4: At the latest...

I am participating in the Bloggy Moms Network Blog Dare and will be doing my best to post every single day of 2015.  Playing catch up right now!

At the latest family get together, we had a larger group than normal.  My cousin drove his wife and 2 kids up from Fayetteville and we got to spend several hours together.  One of my nieces was celebrating her 3rd birthday and we had a great time at the Princess party!  Lots of finger foods were eaten, and that sheet cake and ice cream did not last long either.  The kids had a great time playing together!

My brother in law told Chefy that he was taking my sis to see Wicked at the DPAC this weekend and we all started talking about it.  Chefy planned to get tickets for me for Christmas but could not find good seats.  After the party, Chefy came home and found great tickets for us at StubHub.  We were able to use our gift certificates and not spend money!!  WOOHOO!

At the latest party....I ended up getting another gift...a night out with Chefy!

Blog Dare Day 3: My 2015 Goals

I am participating in the Bloggy Moms Network Blog Dare and will be doing my best to post every single day of 2015.  Playing catch up right now!

2014 was an up and down year for my family.  When I sat down to think about my goals for 2015, it took me a while to get things together.  Here is what I came up with:

Financial Goals:  Pay down credit card debt and start saving money.  This means less eating out and less crazy spending.  Included in this goal is to start refilling my stockpiles of food and household items.  We do not buy things we won't use, and always keep in mind expiration dates on food.  If you let it expire and can't use it, the price you paid was too much!

Health goals:  Eat healthier and get moving!  I am planning to start small and try to increase my walks a little everyday!  We live on a road where there is little traffic, so I plan to walk up and down my road, and I plan to pick up the trash along the way!  We will be preparing a lot more meals at home and will take time to eat together more often!

Blog goals:  I want to build my readership and I want to blog more often.  I am praying that I can blog every day, but I have already missed a few days this year so far!  I want to get caught back up and go full steam ahead.  The other important goal for my blog is to write more quality posts.

Miscellaneous goals:  Get an Etsy store running.  Both Chefy and I are in to crafts, and have started working on getting a store up and running.  We want to get caught up on our scrapbooking.  Spending more time with my daughter, hubby and my mom also is a huge goal.  My most important goal, is to grow in my faith and knowledge of Jesus.  My favorite verse is Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."  That says it all!

Blog Dare Day 2: You're acting...

I am participating in the Bloggy Moms Network Blog Dare and will be doing my best to post every single day of 2015.  Playing catch up right now!

I had to think long and hard to figure out what I was going to write about today.  Then the answer fell right into my lap.

Anyone who knows me understands that I am a huge advocate for children.  In my opinion, anyone who abuses a child deserves to be locked up, and if you kill a child, God Forbid!, I am for the death penalty.  Just like every parent, I have my moments where I get frustrated with the actions of my kids.  Kids do not come with a manual, and parents have to learn to be parents.  It takes time, and if you do not have support it can become difficult.  I understand that...BUT...

In August we were asked if Kat's friend could move in with us for a few weeks.  They were getting evicted from their house and they had no where for Kat's friend to live.  Her mom and little sister were moving in with a friend who only had one bedroom they could use.  Since Kat's friend had no where to go, I said she could stay with us.  Kat's friend plays sports and she had games and practice at least 5 times each week, so we knew there would be a lot of running her back and forth.  Her mom said she was going to give Kat some gas money for running her back and forth, and that she would be buying some drinks and snacks for the friend to eat here.

Fast forward to the end of September.  Kat's friend is still living here.  He mom has never brought over anything for her, and never gave Kat any gas money.  She moved from her friend's house to another friend's house.  Kat helped her move.  She told us that she would get her daughter by mid October.  Within a week, she was told to get out of the friend's house and she moved in with her grandma.  There was not enough room at her Grandma's house for both her kids, so Kat's friend was staying with us.  Supposedly an apartment was coming available before the end of October so Kat's friend could move back.  The 21st of October, she called me to tell me that the apartment fell through and that she had a trailer that was being prepared for them to move in before Thanksgiving.  That night, she bought some groceries for my house as a thank you and gave Kat $20 for gas.

Chefy was not pleased but agreed.  The girls got out of school the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and I got a call that night saying that Kat's friend was going to her dad's for Thanksgiving and they would pick her up Thanksgiving morning and bring her back to my house on Sunday after.  Nothing was mentioned about moving.  Upon her return, we went to the grocery store where the mother met us.  She said that the trailer was not approved and that she had 2 new leads.  She bought groceries again and gave Kat $20 more.

December came with no new information.  Kat's friend went with us as we did all our shopping, to parties, and more.  She was in all our photos and had her own gifts and stocking!  I could not leave her out of anything.  On Christmas Eve morning, the mother came by and picked up Kat's friend.  She was brought back Christmas Day.  We were told that they found somewhere to move and were moving 30th.   Kat helped them move, and now the mother is acting like a total A$$.

She told her daughter that she cannot come and visit us and that she can only hang out with Kat at school.  This woman collected government assistance for over 4 months on a child she that was not living with her, food stamps and child support too.  She would call her daughter once or twice a week and never came over or called me.  All her communication with me was made through Kat.  UGH!
I feel bad for Kat and her friend.  I have no idea what is going on with the mom, but the girls are not to blame for her problems.  Last night she told Kat's friend that she had a week to prove she was going to do what she wanted or she was going to send her to her dads.

She has a 5 yr old who she constantly pawns off on everyone, even me.  I know she expects Kat's friend to watch her sister, and maybe that is causing problems, but exams start on Thursday, and these girls need to study.  I'm at a loss!  Attention Kat's friend's mom...you are acting like an idiot.  Grow Up and take responsibility!

2014 was.....

I am participating in the Bloggy Moms Network Blog Dare and will be doing my best to post every single day of 2015.

2014 was an interesting year for my family.  We started off the year having to fly to Seattle for my mother-in-law's memorial service (celebration of life).  It was a quick trip, but it was a necessary trip for Chefy and me.  Kat, Chefy and I all managed to get sick at one time or another and my grandma fell off a ladder and ended up in the hospital too.

Chefy, Kat and I took LeeLee to White Lake in May and that was really our only vacation!  My sister had a baby boy on June 18th.  JC is adorable!!  He was a big boy at birth, and at his 6 month check up, he weighed 22.4 pounds and was 28" long!

We moved out of our old house the end of June, then Kat turned 16 in July.  She has her own car and is driving everywhere!  I have to admit, she is a great driver (taught by me!), and she takes no chances when she drives!

Kat started her Junior year in August.  I'm very proud of her.  She's making straight A's!   In September, we went to my cousin's wedding in Maryland.  She married her girlfriend of 5 years.

November saw Chefy and me celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary, and Kat got a job!  She is a waitress and she is loving it!  The restaurant is open Thursday-Sunday, which works perfectly for us.  Kat is enjoying making her own spending money and is growing her savings account.

We celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve at Grandma's house.  She fed about 30 people each time.  Grandma is in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease, and although she may not remember everything, she can still cook.

That is about all for our 2014.  2014 was an up and down year for our family!  We're praying 2015 is better for everyone!

How was your 2014?  I'd love to know!

Hello 2015

WOW!  It is so hard for me to believe that 2014 is behind us!  Our lives were filled with lots of ups and downs in 2014, and we are praying for 2015 to be a great year!  I am not going to promise to post everyday, but I can promise that I will be posting more often and that this year will be filled with some of my best posts ever!  God Bless you all!  Praying that 2015 will be bountiful for everyone!
