Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas Review & Giveaway

Disclosure:  We received a free copy of this book to facilitate our honest and unbiased review.  No other compensation was received.  All opinions stated are those of the Shelly's Bits and Pieces family.

Christmas is my favorite holiday and every year I look for new books to read with my children.  While books about Santa and elves can be cute, the books that I really prefer revolve around the birth of Jesus.  My family received Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas and we have loved the book!

About the book:
Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas uniquely teaches the Christmas story to your children by starting at creation and sharing that Jesus has always been present and that God has always had a plan for Christmas. Bible verses and Jesus Calling devotions are on every spread of this beautifully illustrated book with foil and glitter on the cover.

Teach your children the story of Christmas . . . starting from creation! In Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas, children will discover that God always had a plan for Christmas.

Christ was chosen before the world was made.

—1 Peter 1:20

The Christmas story began long, long ago. Before the angel Gabriel told Mary she would have God's Son. Before the shepherds saw the angels and before the wise men saw the star.

Even before the sun and the moon shone for the first time before the first cows ever mooed and the first monkeys ever climbed! Before Adam and Even took their first walk in the Garden of Eden, God had a plan for Christmas.

From the beginning of time, God had a plan to save his children. That plan was Jesus!

Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas is a beautifully embellished jacketed hardcover with foil and glitter. Curl up with your little ones around the Christmas tree with Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas.

I have always been involved in church.  It is hard not to be when your grandfather is a lay-minister, your mama plays the piano, sings and teaches, and your daddy is a minister.  Explaining the entire Nativity story is something I enjoy doing with my children.  The birth of Jesus is the foundation of my Christian belief.  This wonderful book, Jesus Calling®: The Story of Christmas, starts at the beginning, way back at the beginning of time.

My family wholeheartedly recommends this book.  It is a wonderful way to celebrate the story of Christmas, every day of the year.

How To Effectively Save Money

Money can be so hard to save, but so easy to spend. And with life throwing a few curveballs you’re way, emergencies can end up being quite costly. So how can we effectively save money for the long-run? Here are a few tips that might work.

Sell Your Stuff

A lot of us tend to hoard over time, and we can actually hold onto some valuable things that we don’t need. Selling your stuff online is a great way of earning some money, every time you do a spring clean of the property. Sites like eBay are great, and there’s plenty of sites that will buy your old phones or tech gadgets. These can end up being a small fortune if they’re in good condition and still functioning. Some sites though will even buy your broken gadgets so it’s always worth checking, as it’s better off making a bit of money than ending up in your bin, right?

Make A Budget

A budget seems restricting, but if you didn’t have it, you’d probably spend a lot more money. The budget doesn’t have to be too small but if you can calculate how much you usually spend on food, bills and living costs, see how much you can cut it down to. Once you have a budget, challenge yourself to see how long you can sustain the budget. If you’re struggling, add a little more.

Budgeting shouldn’t have to make it harder to save; it should just be looking at what you’re already spending.

Choose Something To Save For

Sometimes having a goal to work towards helps motivate us and stops us from splurging when we really want to. If you have something in mind that you want to save towards, you’ll find yourself more determined to reach that goal. It might be saving for a new car or your first house. It might be buying a holiday or simply a meal out at your favorite restaurant. It is possible to save; you just have to want it enough.

Use Apps

There are now apps that help you save money, and they are a great way of tracking your spending habits. Apps like Mint monitors all of your finances in one place. You can create budgets, keep track of your credit score and even suggests ways of saving money in the process. It’s great to take advantage of all the latest technology available, especially if it’s helping us save money.

Sign Up To Loyalty Card

As long as they’re free, if there are any shops or companies you use regularly, enquire to see if they have a loyal scheme or card you can sign up to. Some places can offer great deals and discounts on products they sell so it’s definitely worth asking about as you can end up saving quite a lot through them.

The money will always come from somewhere, so don’t stress out too much. Using these money-saving tips will hopefully ease off the pressure and stop you from living paycheck to paycheck each month.

God's Good News Book Review #spon

Disclosure:  We received a free copy of this wonderful book to facilitate our honest review.  All opinions stated are those of the Shelly's Bits and Pieces family.

About the Book:  Billy Graham remains one of the foremost pastors in America's history, and parents, grandparents, pastors, teachers, and more will want this lovely edition of God's Good News for the children in their life to show them the way to the cross and to help them begin a lifetime of following Christ. God's Good News is a collection of more than 60 favorite Bible stories told in actual Bible text from the New King James Version, including Noah, Joseph, Moses, David, Jesus, and the disciples, and each story is equipped with a takeaway devotion from Rev. Graham. The takeaways will help children focus on God’s Word, apply it to their lives, and begin walking with God and sharing the good news from an early age. The striking artwork from Scott Wakefield will help children connect with the timeless Bible stories and messages from Rev. Graham. "Christianity is good news. . . . When we open up the Bible, it is good news from cover to cover. It's the good news that God loves us." —Billy Graham

Our thoughts:  This book is one of the best Bible Story and devotional books we have ever reviewed.  The illustrations are wonderful and the Bible stories are the perfect length to keep a child's attention.  Each story is told in the actual Bible text from the New King James Version, and each is accompanied by a devotion from Rev. Graham. My husband has enjoyed this book as much as the kids.  He will sit in his chair and read it with them in the evenings.  With Christmas on the way, this would be the perfect gift for the children and families in your life.

Ellie Claire Art Journals Review #spon #EllieClaireGifts

Disclosure:  We received each of the journals shown below, at no charge, to facilitate our honest and unbiased review.  All opinions stated are those of the Shelly's Bits and Pieces family and have not been influenced at all!

Journaling has been a part of my life since the sixth grade.  I started out writing about my friends and my daily activities and as the years progressed, I found myself writing about my hopes and dreams for the future.  I cherish the time I spend writing in my journals, and I love to sit back and read through old journals.  It is amazing how many things I hoped and dreamed about that have actually come to fruition.

We recently received 3 different Ellie Claire Art Journals to review.  We received the Faith & Lettering Journal, the Illuminate Your Story Journal, and the Illustrated Word Coloring Journal.  All three of these journals are beautifully made.  Designs are embossed into these hardback books and the illustrations inside are so cute too.

The Faith & Lettering book has a pencil/pen loop on the spine so you can always ensure you have a much-needed writing utensil.  The book has an introduction which includes a how-to use the book section.  Blank lined and dotted pages are inter-mixed with Bible verses and pictures.  I have found that I get inspiration to write from the different verses.  Also included is an area to learn how to draw some of the designs.  They have the design, a place to trace the design, and two practice areas for the design.  It is such a cool idea!  The pages are heavier than standard copy paper, and my gel pens do not bleed through.  (Sharpie markers will be visible on the reverse)  This book is an ideal size and it is one of my favorites!

The Illuminate Your Story journal also has the pencil/pen loop, along with a built-in bookmark and an elastic strap to keep the book closed.  An introduction and a how-to section are also included in the journal.  One thing I really liked is the history that is included.  It tells you about the periods of time that different lettering and decorating were used.  There are blank, lined pages as well as pages for you to learn to draw the different styles of letters and other images.  Some of the lettering is HARD to learn to do, without a lot of practice. The paper is much like the other journals, and I suggest you stay away from using Sharpie pens that will bleed.  Inside the back cover, you will discover a keepsakes folder.  I am putting my practice letters in that folder.  This book is smaller than the other two books.  It is just a little larger than my iPad mini.

The Illustrated Word is the final journal we received.  It is about the same size as the Faith & Lettering Journal.  My 20-year-old daughter, Kat reviewed this book.  This is what she has to say about it.  Coloring pages are intermixed with the lined pages so you can color and write your thoughts as you go.  The paper is stronger than standard copy paper, but markers will bleed through it.  Colored pencils and gel pens work great and look wonderful!  The coloring pages include Bible verses and are really nice.  Some of the pages have pictures of paintings and manuscripts that are hundreds of years old.  This book is very relaxing and is perfect for the colorist in your life.

We send a huge thank you to Worthy Publishing and Ellie Claire Gifts for sending these beautiful journals.  They have been such a blessing to both Kat and me.  You can follow Ellie Claire Gifts on Instagram by clicking here.

Large Expenses That Could Be Destroying Your Budget

Living expenses can grow massively over the years, causing your monthly budget to become unmanageable and impossible to live with. If you’re living paycheck to paycheck or even run out of cash before the end of the month, then something needs to change right away. The biggest expenses in your budget, like groceries and housing, are far from unnecessary, but there’s also no need for them to be quite so large. With that in mind, here are five large expenses that could be destroying your budget and things that you can do to reduce them.

1. Housing
Your rent or mortgage will understandably take up a large portion of your budget, often as much as 30% of your monthly income. If your housing costs are even larger than that, then you may want to consider moving to a smaller property or cheaper area. Just make sure that you take the moving costs and any other additional expenses into consideration. Of course, this may not be something that you can or want to do, in which case, you could speak to your landlord or lender.

2. Energy
With the cold weather drawing in and winter just around the corner, homes all over the country are sure to see a rise in their energy bills. To limit this and keep costs low, you should find ways to stay warm without cranking up the heat. For example, you could invest in roof insulation and block up any draughts around your home. You could also wear extra layers. To keep electricity costs down, you need to eliminate phantom energy by turning things off when they’re not in use.

3. Entertainment
Getting rid of your television altogether is a brilliant way to reduce energy and entertainment costs. That being said, it’s far from a realistic solution. Instead of taking away your TV altogether, you could cancel your cable and use streaming services instead. This way, you can still watch anime, television shows, films, and more, but for a much smaller cost. You could also look for free things to do in your local area instead of spending every time you want to have some fun.

4. Transportation
No one realizes just how expensive cars are until they have one of their own. Most only really consider the cost of gas, but there is also insurance, tax, parking, maintenance, and much more to take care of. To cut this expense drastically, you could trade in your car for a cheaper one or even ditch driving completely. After all, public transportation is often a lot cheaper. You could also try walking or cycling to work, as this is free and allows you to get a workout in too.

5. Groceries
Food can get incredibly expensive if you’re not careful, but, with some thought and planning, it is possible to eat healthily without breaking the bank. You should start by writing meal plans and shopping lists and actually stick to them. You should also try swapping to cheaper or generic brands and only eat fruits and vegetables when they’re in season. Limiting meals out will also reduce costs, but there are deals you can find when you do head to a restaurant.

There’s no way to escape many of the large expenses in your budget, but, hopefully, with the advice above, you’ll be able to reduce them and make your money go further.

End of Year Finance Tips and Advice

As the end of the year approaches there starts to come the realization that money isn’t as accessible as it seemed to be earlier in the year. The holidays are around the corner and the summer vacation is now a distant memory, albeit often an expensive one. So as we head into the final months, the time has come to assess bank balance and check our credit.

It’s never a conversation that is enjoyable but with figures like $12.7 trillion for household debt being revealed by places like https://debtconsolidation.loans/ there comes a time that reigning in the spending becomes a necessity. So what can be done to prevent household bills becoming a bigger and bigger burden around our necks?

As discussed here, measuring your debt isn’t something to be afraid of and is actually quite a manageable task, especially these days with so many websites offering you advice on spending and cash flow. Developing a debt management strategy is one of the main ways forward and can be achieved by following a few easy steps. It is important to remember, you are not the first person to bulk at your bills, and you won’t be the last.

Source: pixabay.com

Make sure you are paying off your debts using your own prioritization system. Just because a figure is significant doesn’t mean it should be addressed first and vice-versa. Managing your accounts is more than just lifting the heavy load but also assessing your options to make the number of fiscal voices smaller and quieter.

Pay particular attention to the smaller sums in your day to day life. Is it cheaper to make something at home rather than buy out? Do you need to purchase something new for the house or will some DIY spruce up your living space just as well without causing extra strain on the purse strings? Saving on these smaller expenditures will soon add up and suddenly your bank account will start to look a lot healthier.

If you do have loans or bills to pay out, keep an eye on the time sensitivity of those payments. Some lenders will have extra charges attached to missed payments and the last thing you need is to add another sum on top of your year’s tally.

Remember you are not alone and for that reason, the internet as mentioned above is here to help you. There are several price comparison websites available to you for those purchases you must make and many other money saving tips out there. As debt rises so do the number of ways that we can manage costs and organize our lives.

Modern day life is chaotic enough so don’t let the burden of debt bring you down any further, take the time to assess your income and outgoings so that you can continue to enjoy the end of the year as much as the start.

3 Types Of Insurance All Adults Need

Insurance is an essential requirement for any family, forming a core protection against any expensive mishaps or problems in the future. However, with so many different insurance products on the market, how can you know which you should prioritize?

To answer this question, below, we’ve focused on the three key insurance products every family should own. If you want to purchase additional insurance products, you can - of course - do so, but we’ve focused on are the core essentials that everyone needs.

#1 - Vehicle insurance

In most jurisdictions, vehicle insurance isn’t just a nice thing to have - it’s a legal obligation. Furthermore, even if you are not required by law to purchase insurance, it’s still worth doing: car repairs can be ruinously expensive, and insurance is crucial for mitigating some of these costs.

#2 - Building insurance

Building insurance focuses on the structural elements of your property; you can often bundle this with contents insurance, but the buildings element is by far the more important of the two. Structural problems in a property can be extortionately expensive to repair, so coverage is an absolute must if you own your own home.

#3 - Life insurance

Life insurance is not something that many young people think about, but it’s nevertheless a worthwhile policy that can help to protect your family’s financial well-being in the future. The infographic is a great place to start when looking at life insurance for the first time, so it’s well worth reading through and then exploring your options in more detail…

3 Great Ways To Suddenly Expand Your Life Now

We have all had the experience of suddenly feeling as though our life's going nowhere - or nowhere in particular -and not knowing what to do about it. This feeling of despair aside, the truth is that there is always something practical that can be done in such cases, and it’s something which you should bear in mind if you are starting to wonder what you might be able to do to improve your life situation. No matter where you’ve been, or where you are now, you have within you the power to harness and shape your own story, and that authorship is the kind of skill you need to live a life of happiness and whatever you might personally deem to be a success. In this article, we will look at four of the ways in which you can expect to suddenly and irreversibly expand your life. Following any of these paths will ensure that your life opens up grandly in front of you, so they are well worth considering.

Move Abroad

Moving home is always going to have some kind of a profound effect on you, but you need to be careful not to simply go form place to place whenever you feel like a change. Do that, and you end up living the life of someone who is trying to run away from pieces of themselves, and it rarely ends well in any sense. That being said, sometimes a move is exactly what you need to get the fire going again - and what could be more illuminating for you than moving somewhere completely different and exotic to what you are used to?

If you have lived in the same country your whole life, you will likely be a little afraid at the prospect of moving abroad. However, it is one of the greatest things you can do, especially if you feel that you have become stuck in a rut somewhat. Moving abroad may prove to be exactly the kind of challenge you need in order to get yourself going again and feel as though you are achieving more in life, so it is absolutely something to consider on that front at least. Of course, there will be any number of concerns you need to face head-on if you are to get it right, but that alone is a great reason why it is likely to be a good means of expanding your life right now.

First of all, make sure you have a clear idea on where you would actually like to go. If you are merely following work or a partner, you will know this already and it will be decided for you to a certain degree. However, if not, you have the opportunity to choose somewhere that you think you will be happy, and that is a great and exciting choice to be given at any time in life. You should consider primarily the culture, and see if, say, Malaysia is going to suit you in that sense, as that will contribute greatly to how happy you are. You should also make sure you carry out the necessary research, by reading Malaysia property news in this case and generally keeping your eye out for anything important. The more prepared you are in these ways, the more likely it is that you will be able to move abroad and truly make the most of it. Make sure that you are doing this at a good time in your life too so that you are not going to cause any kind of upset which you would really rather not have. Get all that right, and it could make all the difference in the world, and you might be living your dream in no time at all.

Change Careers

The idea that you should stick to one career for life is only really something to take seriously if you have a vocational career which you have worked hard to be in, and which you genuinely enjoy for what it is. Even then, there is always the possibility that one day you'll wake up and decide to do something else. If that does happen, there is nothing wrong with that, and it’s a good idea to allow such openness and flow to be a part of your life if you want to be truly happy. The truth? Changing careers can often be a great way to bring about a little more life in your livelihood.

So if you feel that you are in need of a career change, what should you do? The first is to think about the source of your discontent with your current job, for in that lies the secret of what you would rather be doing instead. Perhaps, for instance, you don’t like sitting at a desk all day, and you want to be on your feet. You might consider becoming a teacher or a gardener or any number of professions out there. Knowing this will help you make your decision, as you can see. You can then look into what kinds of careers you might enjoy which you are likely to be able to get into without too much trouble.

Don’t limit yourself here. Give yourself every piece of faith you can that you can land whatever job you want. There might be some training you need to undergo or some life changes you need to make to accommodate for the new role, but as long as you do so you can generally do most of the jobs you set your mind to if you really want to. What’s more, going for something challenging will help to boost your confidence and ensure that you are going to be able to keep your personal growth in action. As you can see, something as simple as a career change really can make a huge difference to how you feel about your life, and about yourself, in a way which can mean a much more enjoyable experience for you in the here and now - as well as being able to feel happier and more excited for your future.

Do Something Frightening

Fear is in many ways a useful emotion, as it lets us know when we are doing something risky. Sometimes this risk is that we are putting the body under terminal risks, such as bungee jumping or skydiving. That’s not for everyone, but another kind of risk is certainly something we should all court whenever we feel able to: namely, the risk of failure. You risk failing when you try something outside of your comfort zone, and by that very means you are ensuring that you can expect to grow from that situation. As it turns out, engaging in something frightening on a regular basis is one of the best things you can do for your own growth, and it is certainly something to consider if that interests you at all.

The frightening thing is so because you haven't done it or you’re not used to it yet, and because of that it is precisely something that you should think about doing. It will boost your confidence, even if it goes wrong, because even in that failure you will find that you survived, and you’re safe, and it’s okay to risk things like that. Plus, chances are you won’t fail, and that will be even greater for your confidence. There is really no losing out when you risk like this so you could say it’s not much of a risk at all. You will further and strengthen your resolve profundo, and start to live a life much more full and complete as a result.

Purchasing A Family Car? What You Need To Think About

At some point, you may find yourself in the market for a new car. Your current vehicle may have just run its course, costing more to fix than perhaps it is worth, or maybe you need to upgrade your model because of the family. Perhaps you need more boot space or extra seats for the children and their car seats. Whatever the reason, it can be a daunting experience to ensure that you not only find the right car, but you also get the right deal. So I wanted to share with you some of the things that you could consider to help you purchase your next family car.

What sort of car do you need?

One of the first things you need to think about would be the sort of car that you need. Is it to do with the size, such as needing an extra amount of space in the boot area. Is it bigger seats to accommodate more car seats or even things like a higher drive such as four wheel drive for country driving. Knowing what your peridotite are can really help you decide on the best route to take when it comes to your family car. It can help you to decide on manufacturers, models and even other aspects like the engine size. You might also want to use this time to test drive and see as many different vehicles as possible. It helps you to make the right decisions when it comes to your future vehicle.

Make sure you get the most money for your trade in

The next thing to consider is your current vehicle. This is one of the things that you can utilize to ensure that you can get a great deal on your next vehicle. You may have equity in your car, or even own it outright, and this can be used to reduce the overall cost of your new vehicle. But you will need to know the trade in value car, first of all, so you know exactly what situation you are in. This is valuable knowledge to help you obtain the best deal when attending a dealership.

How will you purchase it?

You also need to start considering how you will purchase your next vehicle. There are a few different options to consider. Not many people buy a car outright these days because a car depreciates in value. You could consider different monthly options, and with lease deals or loan arrangements available, you could be spoilt for choice. You might want to take the time to explore all your options so you can determine not only the best option for you but also the best cost.

Top tips to help you do it

Finally, purchasing a car isn’t the easiest and most pleasant experiences. So you may be wondering what the best ways are to go about it. The truth is, test driving, shopping around and haggling on the deal will always serve you well. You need to ensure that you are making the right choice when it comes to purchasing your car, and so taking your time is essential. After all, after a house, it can be one of the biggest purchases you make.

I hope that these tips help you when it comes to purchasing your next family car.

Five Ways We Can All Become More Independent

Most of us are far less independent than we might think. We can rely on parents, partners and friends in lots of ways- and while in many cases this isn’t a bad thing, sometimes it can be. When we’re depending on someone else to take care of us emotionally, financially or in any other way, it stops us from growing and evolving as a person. We all need a little support and help at times, and that’s what family and friends are there for. But for the most part, we should be standing on our own two feet. We should be able to look after ourselves without relying on others to do so- achieving this is freeing for both us and them. If you know you’re not as independent as you should be, here are some of the ways you can make changes.

Learn to cook
All of us need to eat. It’s about fuelling our bodies for energy, and giving it the things it needs to ward off illness and generally feel good. You might have moved away from home and no longer rely on parents to feed you, but do you rely on your partner? Do you resort to eating takeout and convenience food because you feel like you don’t have the knowledge or skills to cook for yourself? Learning to cook can save you money and also allows you to take responsibility for this area of your health. If your repertoire includes boxed mac n cheese and baked beans on toast then it’s time to make some changes! You don’t need to become a michelin star chef, but it is important to know how to feed yourself nutritious food that you enjoy and that fits within your budget. It’s surprising the number of adults out there who aren’t able to do this, so if this sounds like you you’re not alone! Things like pasta bake, chili, soups and stews and curries can all be simple to make and can be put together with humble ingredients. Check out sites like Pinterest for inspiration and learn to cook a number of dishes that would allow you to feed yourself if it came down to it without having to resort to convenience food. Even if your partner likes to cook and does all of the cooking, it’s worth you knowing as well. If you ever broke up, these are skills that you’ll need to get by on your own.

Get a car
You might get around ok using public transport, but nothing will give you true independence quite like your own vehicle. Learning to drive can be a long and arduous process, but the quicker you get started the sooner you can pass and look into getting on the roads yourself. Buying a car can be expensive, so one trick is to save a little each week as you’re learning to drive. By the time you have your license you’ll have a good amount stashed away that you can put towards either the car or the insurance. To cover the cost of the vehicle, you have companies like sofi loans for personal loan options or you could also go with car finance. These allow you to spread the cost, and have the car right away instead of having to save up for months.

Manage your money correctly
Speaking of loans, being able to manage your money correctly is a sure step to independence. Even if you’re in the lucky position where you don’t need to work, it’s worth having some kind of income of your own. Working, even part time can help you to develop your skills, keep you productive and gives you access to money that’s yours. You could work from home, starting a blog or a home business could earn good money. If you’re skilled at writing, website design, app design or something else then you could become a freelancer. Budgeting is also incredibly important, whether you have a little or a lot to work with, knowing how to manage this will prevent you needing to ask others to help you financially or falling into debt. Budgeting apps, spreadsheets, even old fashioned pen and paper can all help you to keep track so find a system that works for you.

Get comfortable with alone time
As humans, we’re social creatures. Loneliness is a real thing, we all need social interaction and a good network of loved ones around us- it’s actually good for our mental health. However, we should also be able to spend time alone when needed, and we shouldn’t be relying on others to be entertained, fulfilled or to provide emotional support at all times. Being independent is about being able to rely on yourself, being able to be there for yourself, keep yourself occupied, cheer yourself up if you’re feeling down. When we rely too much on others for emotional support we can become a burden to them, and not only that but it’s a dangerous game where you will almost always be left disappointed. Allow yourself to cry on a friend’s shoulder when you need it, but be able to pick yourself up too. Learn ways to make yourself feel better when times are hard- it could be reading a book, exercise or having a hot bath. Get comfortable with alone time and learn to enjoy your own company. There are always going to be times when the only person you have is yourself, so get to know yourself, get to like yourself.

Consider living solo
There’s no better way to put all of these lessons to the test than by living by yourself. If you really want to know what you’re made of, and have the opportunity to stand on your own two feet then go for it. Maybe you’ve just come out of a relationship, or perhaps you’re looking to move out for the first time. Instead of looking to move in with others, give solo living a try. Cooking, budgeting, getting around and spending time alone are all things that you will have to learn to do and it can really help you to grow as a person. It doesn’t have to be forever, utilise this time and use it for self discovery and personal development.
