How Can You Bounce Back From A Stormy Siutation?

Life is never a bed of roses. No matter how favorable the circumstances you’re born into, there isn’t a life out there without its fair share of challenges in some respect. Your troubles could be emotional. They could be physical. They could be financial. The only real certainty is that dealing with adversity is a natural part of life. And in a way, no matter the type and severity of the challenges that crop up, the important part is always how you deal with it. Learning to navigate stormy waters and become emotionally resilient is a valuable life skill - one we should strive to achieve in our own lives, help others with and pass on to our children. You may never be able to change what has happened to you, but you can change how you deal with it.

Take Back The Power

When setbacks first hit, often our first reaction can be outrage and just how unfair it all is. Why are you the one who has been made redundant, contracted a serious illness or endured a tough relationship break-up? Actually, it's pretty pointless to begin down this track. We all know that events like those usually aren’t down to anything you have done or not done. And there will be plenty of time later for identifying potential behaviors that weren’t helpful and that you could work on. But for now, accept that you cannot control what has happened - but you can control your reaction. Even making that realization shifts the power balance. Change the narrative from victimhood to someone who is doing everything in their power to regain control and handle a difficult situation with dignity.

Find The Right Support

While challenges are inevitable, having the right support around you isn’t, unless you seek it out. Having the right combination of friends and loved ones, formal support groups or therapy sessions and professionals on call is vital. Assess your situation and take the time to think about what you might need. If you have physical injuries, think about home adaptations or physiotherapy which might help. If you’ve been in a car accident, look into support groups and a specialist like Rosenfeld car accident attorneys. Having the right mechanisms in place and being able to turn to people rather than trying to soldier on alone will help you bounce back much faster.

Set Small Goals

Recovery from any challenging situation is all about baby steps. You can expect to remedy everything overnight. But you can focus on setting realistic, achievable small goals that will create a path to recovery. This may be something like simply updating your LinkedIn profile if you’re facing redundancy, or going to the shops unaccompanied if you’re recovering from a serious illness. Keep these small successes insight and celebrate when you manage to achieve them - even if it's just with a perfect night in front of the TV. Progress may be slower than you’d like, and it may not always be linear - in fact, it often tends to be a case of one step forward and two steps back - but you will wake up one day and realize just how far you’ve come.
